“I’ll never forget”- John 13
JJ Johnson
January 25, 2026

Last week we talked about focusing on private worship over public opinion, obeying before understanding, thinking about the cross often, and how pride blinds us while belief helps us see.
Have you reflected on this this past week?  Any insights?

What Jesus did:
In John’s recording of this memory, it is obvious he never forgot how secure Jesus was in his own skin.  Because He knew who He was, He could serve the way He did.  Where do you notice insecurity keeping you from serving freely—either by holding back or by serving to be noticed?

Peter resists being washed, not serving. Why do you think receiving grace can be harder than offering loyalty? Where do you see that struggle in your own faith?

What Jesus knew:
Consider Jesus’ actions in the upper room in light of the difficulty Jesus knew was ahead (John 13:1-3).  How does Jesus’ confidence in His mission encourage or challenge you when facing your own difficult or uncertain “hour”?

Jesus washed His disciples’ feet knowing Judas would betray Him and Peter would deny Him, the others would scatter and the cross was coming.  How does this change your understanding of servant leadership?  What might it look like to serve others when we suspect (or know) they might hurt us?

How can we “love one another to the end” even when we anticipate difficulty or disappointment?

What Jesus said:
Jesus told His disciples to follow His example and love one another as He loved them. What does that kind of love look like practically in your relationships right now?

Jesus called John and his brother the Sons of Thunder near the beginning of their time together (Mark 3:17) and today because of his writings, John is known as the Apostle of Love.  How has Jesus’ love changed you?
